John P. Snyder 1926-1997
John Snyder was one of, if not the
leading authority on map projections. He was also a kind individual who personally
helped us here at Mentor Software. We will miss him greatly! Here is an
article on the life and work of John Snyder.

Answers:
1. A French surveyor, circa 1100 AD
2. Eratosthenes, a hellenistic philosopher born about 275
BCE and died about 195 BCE, lived in Alexandria where he was director of the large
library. Just how accurate his geometric estimate of the earth circumference was we
don't know, because we don't know the length of the "stadion", but it was close.
