Ask Norm - December 1998

Q. How do you convert between State Plane and Albers [using Tralaine]?  I know that Albers comes up as an option in User Defined Coordinate Systems but what about the rest of the definition (e.g. origins)?  -Candace B.

A. Using Tralaine, we convert from one coordinate system to another; and all cooridnate systems are given unique names as we do with files in a directory.  There are several coordinate systems based on Albers. For example, US48 is a NAD27 based Albers Equal Area coordinate system used for mapping the 48 states.  USAK is an Albers Equal Area based coordinate system which is used to map Alaska.

The Tralaine distribution contains over 1,000 coordinate system definitions.  You can convert from any one to another other by entering the name of the coordinate system on the appropriate edit box on the conversion screen.

So, for example, to convert from Flordia East state planes to Albers, you would use FL-E (Florida East) for the input coordinate system, and US48 (Albers Equal Area for the 48 states) as the output coordinate system.

Use the Coordinate System editor if you desire to see the origins etc associated with the US48 coordinate system name. In Tralaine, you create these definitions, assign a name, and then simply refer to the complete definition by name. You don't have keep choosing/entering the origins and stuff like that.

Q. I would like some assistance in finding a source of information on monuments (geodetic control points) in Westchester County, New York.  I have asked many people and looked long on the web.  Any suggestions? - William B.

A. Well, we did some surfing on the web and found this information at:
http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/CDROM/DScdromInfo.html

Geodetic Data Sheets contain this data.  They sell for $50 (on CD) for the northeast United States region:

CT, DE, DC, KY, ME, MD, MA, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, VA, and WV

To order:

NOAA, National Geodetic Survey, N/NGS12,
1315 East-West Highway, Station 9202
Silver Spring, MD 20910-3282

GEODETIC DATA SHEETS

NGS' principal information product is the data sheet, combining control point position and height information in a single format. ASCII DATA SHEET FILES. The data sheet includes:

The horizontal and vertical datums on which the control point information is based,

The horizontal coordinates, and ttheorthometric height for the point and the methods used to determine these values,

The horizontal datum shift (NAD 83 minus NAD 27), and the vertical datum shift (NAVD 88 minus NGVD 29),

Modeled geoid height, ellipsoidal height, modeled gravity, and Laplace correction,

State plane coordinates and Universal Transverse Mercator coordinates,

[Here's what you were looking for]
A description of the mark’s location and how to reach it, and a history of when the station mark was recovered, the condition in which it was found, and updates to the station description prompted by the recoveries.

I think this is what you are looking for, right?  I didn't find a location for downloading individual county information. Looks like they lumped the whole Northeastern US in one CD.

Good luck!  Ann (Norm told me where to find it!)

[Editor's Note: Received the following input from a Casual Cartographer Subscriber]

In the above, the following url might have been given:

http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheet.html

Select:

Retrieve a set of up to 100 data sheets from the NGS DataBase by area search

Enter the target Latitude and Longitude as shown, submit the query, and save the results to a text file.

A word of warning about the monuments listed in this database.  Many obsolete monuments are listed and the database is always being updated.  A particular current monument may not have been recovered, since the recovery teams are not always experienced.  Also, the coordinates of many were taken from USGS Topographical maps.  Some examples from my own neighborhood follow.

The first is completely obsolete, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base relocated ts headquarters and removed the flagpole in the early 1980's.  The location given is inside a building.

The second is a 120' tall water tank which was removed in the summer of 1980, correctly listed as not found.

The third shows what can happen with poor recovery.  The monument is one that I've used for GPS work several times.  The U.S. Power Squadron failed to recover it on their first attempt and somebody showed them where it is located.
