Note: There was a problem with an previous
version. This is the new one.
I received several requests for MGRS (Military Grid
Reference System) in the last few months, so it was time to implement this
feature for our products. This freebie is the Windows dialog I used to test
this new feature out.
The Military Grid Reference System provides a means of
assigning a designation to a piece of geography on the earth. When used to
maximum precision, the region can be as small as one meter square.
Therefore, the single MGRS designation can also serve as the coordinates of
a point in applications where accuracy below the meter level is not
important. Since the coordinate is a single alphanumeric string, rather than
two numbers, software designers can experience difficulty finagling this
into the scheme of a generalized coordinate conversion tool. I’m trying to
figure this one out now.
Hope this is of value to at least some of you out there.
