It!
For September, 1999, the freebie of the month is something that I've always wanted. In
this case, this little utility will calculate the many radii which can be associated with
an ellipsoid.
Being something that I have always wanted, and since we have just devoted three issues of the Casual Cartographer to reviewing
the implications of the different radii, this was the month to sneak the development of
this little goodie into the schedule.
The calculated radii values have several uses:
1> Using the appropriate radius value, ellipsoidal calculations can be approximated
with the simpler spherical calculations. Very useful when testing or trouble shooting
coordinate system definitions and projection code.
2> Using the appropriate radius to approximate a specific ellipsoid, one can rapidly
develop applications which perform useful calculations without having to develop rigorous
ellipsoid code.
3> Being able to quickly obtain radii numbers for different ellipsoids can help in
determining the ellipsoid used for a specific set of data coordinates.
So, while not the coolest thing in town, this handy little calculator can be of value
to some, if not many, Casual Cartographers.
