Rockware, Inc. is now fulfilling orders for Tralaine, Hawkeye, Multric, and Marinus. Norm still handles tech support at 1-888-ASK-NORM (1-888-275-6676) or 303-277-9967.

TralaineÔ converts coordinates in data files from one geographic coordinate system to another; latitudes and longitudes to State Planes or State Planes to UTM's for example. Tralaine's Coordinate System Dictionary includes over 1,000 coordinate system definitions and you can modify any of these or define your own. Tralaine can handle 15 widely used file formats, converts from NAD27 to NAD83 or between any two of the 161 Datums in its Datum Dictionary. Everyone on your staff can be an expert cartographer.

Save Time and Money Anybody can perform the large complex coordinate conversions accurately in minutes, using the native format for your data. You don't have to be an expert cartographer to be able to use Tralaine.

Bid More Jobs Efficient coordinate conversion can open up new opportunities for your data and services.

Win More Bids By combining data from more sources, your proposals will be more accurate, informative, and professional looking than previously possible. No more exceptions to RFQ's due to coordinate system/datum requirements.

Improve Quality and Accuracy Accurately adding more data to your maps and GIS increases their information content and quality.

You can enjoy all of these benefits even if you are only a casual cartographer. Tralaine knows of most every coordinate system and datum used in the US. In most cases, all you need to do is supply Tralaine with the file to be converted, its format, its coordinate system, and the coordinate system of the desired output.

Tralaine Specifications

System and Software Requirements

Tralaine will operate under Windows 95/98 or Windows NT (4.0 or later). Tralaine will not operate under MS-DOS or Windows 3.1. Tralaine requires a minimum of 8 megabytes of memory (i.e. RAM) and requires access to a floating point processor. Tralaine itself requires approximately 3 megabytes of disk space on the hard disk. Tralaine users can significantly benefit from the presence of several data files. These data files are available from government related agencies and are often in the public domain. All such data files, taken together, would require another 40 megabytes of disk space. Individual users rarely require access to all of these file. Additionally, these files are also used by other products which you may already have installed on your system. Tralaine provides a means by which it can share a single copy of these data base files with other products.

File Formats

Tralaine supports the following file formats:

DXFÔ Drawing Exchange Format ala AutoCAD® and others, ASCII and binary forms

DLMTXT Delimited Text Format, such as dBASE® DELIM and others

DWG AutoCAD Drawing File Format, Release 10-14 & 2000

SHP ESRI Shape File

TEXT ASCII Fixed Field Text Files

FIXED Fixed Length Record Format, such as dBASE SDF and others

DLG USGS Optional Distribution Digital Line Graph

MBI MapInfo® Boundary File Format

MMI MapInfo Segment File Format

MIF MapInfo MIF Format

GEOCAD DigiRule GEOCAD Format

SEG-P1 Society of Exploration Geophysicists P1 Format

GXF Generation 5 Technology's Transfer Format

ATLAS Atlas GraphicsÔ .BNA Format

GEN Arc/Info® GENERATE LINE Format

TIFF World Files

Coordinates are converted from one system to another during a file copy process. Output format is always the same as the input format, Tralaine does not convert between file formats. Mentor Software routinely adds support for new file formats; call 888-275-6676 or 303-278-3534 X100 for the latest information.

Coordinate Systems

Tralaine's Coordinate System Dictionary contains over 1,000 coordinate system definitions including 122 NAD27 based State Plane Zones, 260 NAD83 based State Plane zones, 120 UTM zones, ILLIMAP, Great Lakes, Albers Equal Area systems used by the USGS, latitude and longitude, and many others. Of course, you can define your own using any of the 32 supported projections.

NAD27 to NAD83 Conversions

NAD27 to NAD83 conversions (or vice versa) are performed using the exact same algorithm and data files as used by the National Geodetic Service's NADCON program. Tralaine's results are numerically identical to those of NADCON. You can convert directly from NAD27 grid coordinates to NAD83 grid coordinates in one pass through the file. The Canadian National Transformation is fully supported.

HPGN Conversions

NAD83 to HPGN (NAD83/91 or HARN) conversions (or vice versa) are performed using the exact same algorithm and data files used by, and results are numerically identical to, the National Geodetic Service's NADCON program. You can convert directly from NAD27 grid coordinates to HPGN grid coordinates in one pass through the file.

Projections

32 projections are supported, the more popular are:

Transverse Mercator Lambert Conformal Conic

Albers Equal Area Conic Mercator

Lambert Tangential Azimuthal Equidistant

Hotine Oblique Mercator American Polyconic

Modified Polyconic Azimuthal Equal Area

Miller Cylindrical Equidistant Conic

Mentor Software routinely adds support for new projections; call 888-275-6676 or 303-278-3534 X100 for the latest information.

Datums

Tralaine's Datum Dictionary contains the definition of 161 datums used around the world. Conversions between datums is accomplished using DMA's multiple regression formulas where data is available, or the Bursa/Wolfe or Molodensky transformations. User's can add new datum definitions using Tralaine's datum editor. Conversions from, for example, NAD27 to WGS72 make full use of the NADCON Overlay if present.

Ellipsoids

Tralaine's Ellipsoid Dictionary contains the definition of 37 ellipsoids used around the world. Of course, user's can add new definitions using the ellipsoid editor.

Numeric Formatting

Formatting pictures enable Tralaine to read data and produce output in a wide variety of formats including degrees, minutes, and seconds for latitudes and longitudes. Direction characters, implied decimal points, and positive west longitude are supported.
