Converting coordinates from NAD27 to NAD83 and vice versa requires that a set of grid
data files be present on your system. Converting between HARN and NAD83 also requires a
similar set of data files; as does the calculation of the geoid height at a given
location. As a result, just about every mapping and/or GIS related program which does
coordinate conversion includes what is becoming a large set of .LAS, .LOS, and .GEO grid
data files.

Our Freebie of the month for July registers these files with the Windows Explorer.
After installation, clicking on any of these files will display a description of the file,
and detailed information as to the coverage and grid density of the file. This has proven
to be very useful to us in determining, for example, that the CSHPGN.LAS file is a
NAD83/HARN grid data file for southern California; which was not obvious to us when we
first encountered this file.
Please note, the program which produces this display is copyrighted, the data files
themselves are in the public domain. You may not distribute this file, however,
anyone can download it from our web site.
