AutoCADs new Light Weight Polylines are great. Theyre fast, compact, and do
everything the old ones did. However, as several of our clients have found, that trusty
old AutoLISP routine which did miracles for us no longer works. Autodesk provides half of
the solution in their bonus pack; a command to convert old style polylines to the new
style. But the other half, converting new style polylines back to the old style, is not
supported.
This means that once your map got converted to the new style, your only
alternative was to save the drawing as a Release 12, twiddle the PLINETYPE variable, and
reload your drawing. Quite painful! Our freebie of the month offers another alternative.
It provides the other half of the solution which Autodesk did not provide. It will convert
the new Light Weight Polyline back to the old style that our legacy applications can
handle.
The procedure is simple: 1) activate the CVTLWPLN command, 2) select the desired
options, 3) click OK, and 4) select the polylines which need to be converted. CVTLWPLN
will ignore anything in the selection set which is not a Light Weight polyline, so
selecting data for conversion is simplified. Once youve used your legacy
application, you can use AutoCADs bonus pack to convert them back to the new style
whenever thats convenient for you.
